GAMING, LAS VEGAS STYLE
Nevada law permits a wide variety of gaming, including traditional card and dice games, race and sports books, slot machines, cashless slot machines, high-tech electronic gambling devices and international games of chance originating in Europe and Asia.
Las Vegas resorts offer an electronic version of virtually every type of casino game. Slot machines linked to statewide networks pay progressive jackpots in the millions. The jackpot grows each time coins drop into any of the more than 700-networked machines located in scores of casinos throughout Nevada. The statewide slot machine network, known as Megabucks, paid a record jackpot of more than $39.7 million in March 2003 to a 20-something bachelor from Southern California.
Fast Facts for 2005:
* Clark County's casinos (Clark County includes Las Vegas, Laughlin, Mesquite, Primm and Jean) took in $7.8 billion in gross gaming revenue. Las Vegas casinos accounted for $6.1 billion.
* The average visitor gambled 3.9 hours per day.
* Eighty-seven percent of visitors say they gamble during their stay.
* Slot machines reign in the casinos - 64 percent of visitors hit the slots during their stay. Blackjack came in a distant second with 16 percent with video poker rounding out the top three with 9 percent.
* Nevada's casino and gaming areas are off limits to people under 21 years old. When the Bellagio opened on the Las Vegas Strip October 1998 as an adult resort, the hotel barred people from the premises who were under 18 years of age unless they were registered guests of the hotel; this policy was a first.
* Some Las Vegas casinos treat gamblers to plush seating, free drinks and buffets in the resorts' race and sports book complexes where live-racing and athletic events are viewed on giant, satellite-fed screens.
The Poker Phenomenon
One of the most popular "sports" to see on ESPN doesn't involve bats or balls but cards and dealers.
We're talking poker.
This game has since reinvented itself as a televised spectator sport. It is tough to turn the television channels without stumbling across an installment of the World Poker Tournament or footage of celebrities showcasing their poker skills or in some cases, lack, thereof. Heightened interest in the game thanks to much publicized poker tournaments is attracting younger, trendier would-be gamblers to Las Vegas. Poker rooms are also back in style with properties such as the Golden Nugget and the Horseshoe revamping its facilities. Caesars Palace and MGM Grand are both set to reopen their poker rooms in March while Bellagio and Bally's are planning to expand their current rooms.
